external non-independence

Terms from Statistics for HCI: Making Sense of Quantitative Data

When the choice of subjects in a study is connected to the topic being studied: an obvious example might be surveying preferences for MacOS or Windows in an Apple Store; less obvious might be using a mobile app-based survey on a topic that is likely to be age related. Overlooking external non-independence may lead to unintentional bias in results.
